ACTION ALERT FOR SENATE HEARING
PUBLIC AFFAIRS LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT
PARTICPATION NEEDED FOR SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING ON H4724
The South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee will hear testimony on Wednesday, February 14 for and against H4624. This bill passed the House by a vote of 82-23. If enacted, it will ban puberty blockers, trans-hormone treatments, and transgender surgery for minors. The South Carolina Baptist Convention passed a resolution at our Fall 2023 meeting encouraging our Legislators to pass this legislation.
The Subcommittee hearing will begin at 10:00am in room 308 of the Gressette Building on the SC Capitol grounds. There will be testimony offered by three people invited by the Subcommittee, who will testify for and against. The Subcommittee will then receive testimony from all who sign up at the door on the day of the meeting.
There will likely be over 100 people signed up to testify. Usually, those who favor this type of legislation are greatly outnumbered by those who oppose it. If you can possibly come to the Statehouse next Wednesday, your presence will make a difference. There will two signup sheets outside the door of hearing room, one for those who support the bill, and one for those opposed. You will need to arrive early (between 9:00am and 9:30am) to sign up.
When your name is called, you will not have to give a formal testimony. All you need to do is stand up and say something like “Senators, thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak today. I rise to encourage you to vote in favor of H4624.” You can also use the email address listed below to submit a statement or letter of support for the bill. Please note that you can send a statement in advance and still be present at the hearing to support the bill.
This is a very important piece of legislation! Your presence will send a strong message of support for this bill to these Senators. I hope you will join me early next Wednesday morning!
