Disaster Relief Unit Leader Training 2024

This event is our annual training for SC Disaster Relief Unit Leaders (Blue Hats). We are moving from summer to spring, to get ahead of hurricane season! The Friday sessions will be for NEW Unit Leaders; Saturday’s sessions will be for both new AND current Unit Leaders.

NEW Unit Leaders must have a recommendation from a DOM/AMS or a current Unit Leader and must be pre-approved by the state DR Office to attend.

Please note that this is a REQUIRED meeting for ALL SC Unit Leaders.

Date: April 12-13, 2024

Location: Ebenezer Baptist Church, 524 S. Ebenezer Road, Florence, SC

Friday, April 12: for NEW Unit Leaders
3:30 p.m. – Check in opens.
4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. New Unit Leader Class (supper included). Current ULs may take the class as a refresher, but you must sign up to attend.

Saturday, April 13:
8:30 a.m. – Check in opens.
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. New & Current Unit Leader Classes (lunch included).

Classes: One of the Saturday sessions will be a leadership class. You will be asked to choose your class from the list below when you register for the event.

Cost: $10.00 per person (non-refundable).

Leadership Classes (pick one):

  • Caring Well for Your Team – Learn to use basic chaplaincy principles to identify concerns and provide good care for a DR team.
  • Assessment – Identify ways to provide assessments that contain the essential information that will give the most help to Unit Leaders receiving the work orders.
  • Dealing with Difficult People – Learn strategies to have hard conversations and still keep harmony within the team.
  • Emergency First Aid – Gain general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include victim assessment, choking, external bleeding, heart attack, stroke, wounds, and burns.
  • Formstack – Learn how to use or fine-tune your skills in the online reporting system for rosters and reports. Hands-on practice is included, so bring your tablet, smart phone, or laptop.
  • Operational Stress Management – Learn to recognize symptoms and levels of stress among disaster survivors or DR team members. Identify ways to offer spiritual, emotional, and physical support to assist individuals in coping with stress.
