Worship & Music Office: Who We Are

The Worship & Music Office of the South Carolina Baptist Convention is  led by Mark Powers, director, who began in January 2008. Mark served for 27  years as a full-time Music Minister in four SC congregations from small to  large. A graduate of Furman University and Southern Seminary in Louisville KY,  Mark has directed music groups of all varieties, leading in all styles of  worship through directing, singing, and playing guitar and saxophone.

Janet Altman, ministry assistant, has been serving in this office since  October 2001. Her previous experiences as choral director in area public  schools, children's choir director, pianist, and keyboardist in local churches  have been an asset to her in the Worship & Music Office.

Working with Mark and Janet is a team of consultants that help in  the many areas of worship and music. Each one of them brings their own unique  experiences and knowledge to help us better serve churches. Our current  consultants are:

  • Baptist AllState - Cameron DeBrew
  • Choir Leadership - Keith Watson
  • Children's Camps - Jasmine Lee
  • Creative Ministries - Stephanie Caldwell
  • Keyboard - Cindy Burn
  • Hispanic Worship - Alan Guardado

As the Worship & Music Office, we are here to help serve you with needs  in many areas:

  • TRIO discipleship groups for Worship leaders to rapidly reproduce worshiping disciples on mission. More details can be found at M3 Trios page.
  • How to start a new worship service to reach new people.
  • Instruction in vocal training and choir/praise team leadership for all  ages.
  • Modern approaches for traditional keyboardists.
  • Collaborative Leadership to guide through times of transition and challence.
  • Bible studies or retreats for your choir, praise team, or other worship  leading groups.
  • Revival, Crusade, or Special Event musical leadership.
  • Substituting on Sunday when your worship leader is absent.
  • Associational or regional music festival leadership.
  • Speaking to your congregation on the theology of worship: “Worship that transcends style”.
  • Consulting for seasonal productions, musicals and creative worship.
  • Music Minister Search Team training and resume service.
  • Time management and organizational skills for busy Worship Leaders.

We have two ministry groups that love to sing & serve across the state and other mission fields:

  • Singing Churchmen - The South Carolina Baptist Singing Churchmen is a men's chorus made up of Music Ministers from across the state serving South Carolina Baptist Churches. It is a member supported group that is approaching 60 years in existence. Each member considers the group to be an extension of his own ministry. For more information & their concert schedule, visit their website:
  • SeraphSong - SeraphSong is a member-supported group that has been in existence since 2005. It was formed in order to provide choral experiences of excellence that encourage worship, provide leadership training and offer fellowship and prayer support among women in ministry in South Carolina Baptist churches. The group has shared in ministry in various venues including churches, prisons, nursing homes and community events. For more information & their concert schedule, visit their website:
