Jack McCormick of Anderson, a Mission Service Corps (MSC) missionary with the North American Mission Board, will serve as the RebuildSC Coordinator, providing overall coordination of rebuild efforts from October’s 2015 “thousand year” flooding throughout the state. McCormick will work through the Saluda Baptist Association in cooperation with South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief, which is managing the RebuildSC initiative.

Following the initial response of South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief (SCB DR), RebuildSC was launched by the South Carolina Baptist Convention to serve families whose homes were damaged during the flooding toward a goal of helping families return to their homes. A priority of RebuildSC is in roof repair of residential homes, since the heavy rains that caused the floods also caused significant roof damage. RebuildSC volunteers have come from South Carolina Baptist churches, but also from other faith groups in the state, and from North Carolina and Georgia Baptist conventions.

While calling Anderson his home, McCormick is already on the ground in the Pee Dee, serving to coordinate work and volunteers, and living from his travel trailer parked in a friend’s yard in Sellers, SC.

“My background is in construction,” McCormick said. “I was a superintendent for a commercial construction firm in Spartanburg until 2003. My wife, Sharon, and I sold our home, resigned our jobs, and became full-time, self-supported missionaries with the North American Mission Board (NAMB) in Atlanta. That’s how I met and got to know Randy Creamer (SCBC Disaster Relief Director) because Randy was on the NAMB staff in Atlanta.” In addition to serving as MSC missionaries for the past 12 years, specifically helping churches with construction projects, the couple has been active nationally with Campers on Mission. Sharon Fields-McCormick also works to educate churches about human trafficking, pornography, and the sexual exploitation of children.

According to Creamer, McCormick will:

  • Provide overall coordination to rebuild efforts in cooperation with the SCB DR Office.
  • Coordinate and support partner states leading RebuildSC in specific areas (NC in Johnsonville and GA in Georgetown).
  • Promote RebuildSC efforts to churches, associations, and other interested groups across SC.
  • Network with other volunteer organizations active in disaster (VOAD).
  • Utilize relationships with potential partners or donors to sustain long term recovery.
  • Cooperate with local officials, county, and state leaders to address unmet needs of the most vulnerable populations.

“I plan to travel and move around with my RV, parking in an area close to where I’m going to work,” McCormick said. “My plan is to serve full-time as long as there is work to do, money available to purchase materials and supplies, and as long as we have volunteers. My initial impression is that we are in this for the long haul. My primary function for the past month has been recruiting volunteers to help with the work here.”

The McCormicks’ home church is Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg.
