Disaster Relief Update: Spartanburg Tornado Response

ALERT for Chainsaw Units

The EF1 tornado that hit Spartanburg on Thursday, Feb. 6 caused quite a bit of tree damage. Chainsaw units are needed to help, starting on Friday, Feb. 14. Rainy weather this week will prevent us from working until then.

Unit Leaders of chainsaw units are asked to pull their teams together, including a chaplain for each team, and notify the DOC of your availability (see contact info below). Bring your heavy equipment if possible.

Chainsaw volunteers, please contact your unit leader about serving in Spartanburg.

Housing is not provided, so teams should plan to travel to the site and return home on the day you serve. While on site, plan to send someone from your team to pick up lunch at a nearby fast food place to take back to the work site.

The Spartanburg Network chainsaw unit from The Church at the Mill began helping people the day the tornado hit and working through the weekend. Also deployed on Saturday (working in the snow!) and again on Monday was the chainsaw unit from Union County Baptist Association, with their tractor.

Shandon Baptist Church (Columbia Metro Association) chainsaw unit sent volunteers with heavy equipment to Spartanburg on Saturday afternoon. They had deployed to a yard in Columbia with downed trees on Friday, finishing the job on Saturday morning. They also sent a chaplain and team of assessors to Spartanburg on Monday, to get jobs lined up for when the weather clears later this week.

Let’s take hold of this opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, showing God’s love to our neighbors in Spartanburg!
