Hurricane Helene Recovery Project Set for Spring Break

Nearly eighteen months after Hurricane Helene tore through the Carolinas, there are still residents with unrepaired damage to their homes. South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief has organized a “spring break project” to help share the love of Jesus by meeting some of these needs. The project targets Spartanburg County, which has the highest number of homeowners still needing assistance, according to the state government’s Office of Resilience.

During the week of March 8, nine SC Disaster Relief (DR) recovery units will serve in Spartanburg County, assisted by two collegiate groups on spring break. One group will be cadets from The Citadel’s Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM). The other college group is from Parkway Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama. Both of these collegiate ministries served in the DR response immediately after Hurricane Helene and wanted to return to continue meeting needs.

Families are slated to receive help in a variety of ways during the spring break week. Chainsaw units will do tree cleanup. Mud-out units will tear out water-damaged sheetrock and prepare the home for repairs. Rebuild units will replace sheetrock and repair roofs.

The volunteers will be housed at Northbrook Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, SC. A DR shower unit from York Baptist Association and a DR feeding team from Screven Baptist Association will be stationed at the church to support the recovery teams. Coordination will be provided by a DR administrative team and the state convention’s DR staff.

Northbrook Church, pastored by Benny Green, is no stranger to hosting Disaster Relief efforts. They served as the host site for DR mass feeding ministry during the two recent back-to-back winter storms. The spring break project will continue to strengthen the church’s witness to the community as neighbors see God’s love in action.
