South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief units and teams served in Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana after Hurricanes Sally and Delta. Those responses are now closed. One of the volunteers shared this experience:

Richard and Johnnie went to the store to pick up a few groceries for the feeding team. As they were busy looking for the items, a feeble bent-over man with tattered clothes came up to them and said, “You’re those people.” They stopped and looked at him. With tears in his eyes he explained, “I had trees down in my yard everywhere. I didn’t have any money to get them moved and didn’t know what I was going to do. I prayed that God would help me and then you showed up. You cut the trees and restored my land so I could get back to farming. I can’t thank you enough. You came at just the right time. Thank you for what you are doing!”

After Hurricane Sally hit the Gulf coast, we provided a chaplain/assessor team, two feeding teams, a chainsaw unit and tractor to assist in Alabama. They served in Robertsdale (near Mobile) and in Gulf Shores, AL.

More of our resources went to help Florida since fewer other states were sending units there than to Alabama. Serving in Pensacola from SC were 3 shower/laundry teams, 2 mud-out units, 1 chaplain team, 1 feeding team, 2 mud-out units, and 4 chainsaw units, three with heavy equipment. 

One mud-out unit that served in Pensacola went later to Louisiana to assist with the Hurricane Delta response (the week of Oct. 19-24). Like this one, there are several other units that deployed more than once, after three hurricanes came ashore on the Gulf coast in six weeks!

We are grateful for every volunteer and every leader that dropped what they were doing, rearranged schedules, and left their families to go and minister to strangers, showing God’s love to those in crisis.
