“Sir, this is Mark Powers, reporting an urgent hostage situation here in SC.
Hostage Situation!
“Sir, this is Mark Powers, reporting an urgent hostage situation here in SC. Yes, the situation is serious and must be dealt with immediately. The hostages are our SC Baptist Music Ministries. The assaulting forces are other programs within the church. No sir, the hostage-takers cannot be classified as an enemy force. In fact, the other forces are actually positive forces in their intent.
Then how could they be classified as an assault force? Well, sir, they have moved in and taken over the music ministry time slots and recruited active music ministry members to participate and lead for them. They take many forms with lots of potential for good: Awana for kids, praise bands for youth, leadership team meetings for adults, and lots more.
So you are asking has this pushed us to maximize our ministries? Have we offered them our help and worked to forge effective partnerships? Well, actually, we’ve mainly been afraid to do anything and have just stood by and tried to be nice about it. You see, it all happened so gradually. But now we hardly have a job description to show for our salaries. That’s why this is such a serious hostage situation and needs your immediate intervention!
Oh yes, we in Music Ministry do need to be more focused on your calling to the church and equip ourselves as better leaders. And yes, we are guilty of laziness at times. Yes, we could position ourselves for the high calling of building disciples and not just making pretty music. Okay sir, I hear you, we are in a hostage situation of our own making. Yes sir, Lord. I understand. Forgive us, Lord!”
