      This camp for 3-5 graders is an exciting week filled with wonderful opportunities for personal, spiritual, and musical development. These experiences can help strengthen God's Kingdom through the music ministry of your church.

 Thomas H. Westmoreland Summer Music Camp Scholarship
A limited number of $50.00 scholarships are available for Youth MusicArts Camp, Young Musicians Camp, and Children's Music Mini-Camp.  Scholarships are determined by financial need and are applied directly to the cost of the camp.  Application deadline is postmarked by April 23, 2010.  To print off information and application, click: Westmoreland Music Camp Scholarship.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Qualifications – Young Musicians Camp is open to children active in your church who are completing grades 3-5 in the

2009-10 school year. Sixth graders, who are still included in their church’s Children’s Ministry, are also eligible.

 

Chaperones – Churches are REQUIRED to provide competent chaperones, age 21 or older. Send one chaperone of the same gender for every 1-6 boys and 1-6 girls.

 

Registration – Forms must be completed in full. The deadline for registration is June 19, 2010. A $100 deposit for campers and chaperones must accompany each registration. All registrations received before May 15 qualifies for a $10 total cost discount. Registrations received after June 19 will be assessed a $15 late fee per camper and chaperone. Refund policy: There will be no refund on or after June 20, 2010. To receive a full refund of the deposit amount, the Worship & Music Office must be notified in writing by May 20, 2010. Cancellations made in writing by June 19, 2010 will be refunded ½ the deposit amount.

 

Faculty – Music Camp Faculty includes Ministers of Music, Music Directors and Children’s Choir leaders from across the state. All are qualified musicians and dedicated church leaders who are sensitive to the musical, spiritual and emotional needs of children.

 

Worship – Worship is an important part of Music Camp. Each day there will be a worship experience tailored to this particular age group. Campers will participate in discussion groups following worship services. Each evening will conclude with a church group devotional led by chaperones.

 

Choir – All children will sing in the Camp Choir. This year’s musical has been carefully selected and will be appropriate to the musical abilities of 3rd – 5th graders.

 

Classes – Every Camper will take one instrumental and one special interest class. All classes will have a sharing time at the end of the week. A variety of class choices is available. Register early to ensure that campers receive their first choices. Late registrants may not receive their class preferences.

 

Recreation – Afternoon recreational activities include swimming pool, the White Oak “beach,” crafts, ping pong, videos and fishing (bring your own gear).

 

First Aid – A medical technician is available at the Conference Center. A doctor is on call and emergency hospitalization is available in nearby Winnsboro.

 

Special Features – Fun activities are planned for each day of Camp. Special Features include: Monday – Aerobic Praise; Tuesday – Field Day; Wednesday – Swimming and Inflatables; Thursday – Special Interest Class Sharing, Friday-Instrumental Class Sharing

 

Concert – Camp concludes with a concert on Friday at 1:15 PM in the Auditorium.

CLASS OFFERINGS

Please select your three top choices from each category.

 

INSTRUMENTAL

A. Beat It! – Learn the basics of playing drums.
B. Guitar – For those who want to learn to play the guitar. (You MUST bring a guitar to Camp.)
C. Guitar II – For those who are experienced in playing the guitar. Participants must be able to change chords without breaking the strum pattern on these chord changes: G-C-D-G and D-G-A-D. (You MUST bring a guitar to Camp.)
D. Handbells – For campers who would enjoy handbell ringing (no experience necessary).
E. Harmonica – Learn the basics of playing the harmonica. Harmonicas will be available for $6.
F. Keyboard – An introduction to learning to play the piano. This class is for those who have NEVER had ANY piano lessons. There is a $9 book fee for this class.
G. Mallet Instruments – Campers will play a variety of keyboard percussion instruments including xylophones, metallophones and bells, as well as percussion instruments designed especially for children.
H. Recorder – Learn to play the recorder, a flute-like instrument used in schools. Recorders may be purchased at Camp for $6 or you may bring your own.
I. Strings – An opportunity to learn to play the violin. A $10 violin rental fee is required for this class and will be paid at Camp.

 
SPECIAL INTEREST

L. Balloon Sculpting – Learn the basics of balloon sculpting and how to sculpt several balloon creations. This class is for older children only. This class has a $10 materials fee which is to be paid at Camp.
M. Banners – Help design and make worship banners for Camp.
N. Creative Movement – Interpret songs using a variety of movement.
O. Drama – Learn to use drama as an expression in worship.
P. Puppets – Learn how to operate a puppet and produce skits.
Q. Sign Art – An introduction to the basics of signing. Campers will learn to sign a few songs.
R. Singing – Improve your singing voice with fun activities.
S. Stomp! – Make music with a beat using everyday items such as trash cans, pails, etc.
T. Stickin’ and Steppin’ – Interpret songs with dowel rods and rhythmic step.

THINGS TO REMEMBER & BRING

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

* Be polite and respectful to everyone.
* Always let your chaperone know where you are.
* Be sure to tell your chaperone about any medicine or medical problems.
* Wear shoes and walk everywhere you go.
* Attend everything on your schedule.
* Always be on time.
* Do not break in line at meals.
* Wear a cover-up/T-shirt to and from the pool.
* Take care of everything at White Oak. 
* Do not jump on the beds.
* Place your trash in the proper containers.
* Boys are not to go into girls’ rooms and girls are not to go into boys’ rooms – no exceptions!
* Be quiet after “Lights Out” time.
* Hats may only be worn during free time!
 

WHAT TO BRING:

* A great spirit of cooperation.
* Clothes for hot weather. (Do not bring spaghetti strap tops, halters, stomach-bearing tops or short shorts.)
* A sweater or light jacket – all buildings are air-conditioned and it may get cold inside.
* Modest bathing suit (one-piece or tankini style for girls) and flip-flops or swim shoes.
* Towel for use after swimming.
* Tennis shoes with a secure back (for Field Day and other outdoor activities).
* A small amount of spending money for crafts, the canteen and souvenirs from the Gift Shop.
* Denim shorts to be worn with your Camp T-shirt at the Friday concert.
 

WHAT NOT TO BRING:

* Cell phones
* Radios, MP3/CD/DVD player, iPods
* TVs 
* video games, personal devices
* roller blades, scooters, or skate boards
* water guns
