Creating a Multiplication Mindset Through Sunday School
Belinda Jolley, Director, Adult Ministry Office
What does a multiplication mindset look like in Sunday School or other ongoing small groups?

Use the chart below to describe what you think a multiplication mindset looks like. Do the same for a hoarding mindset. Think about the statements or attitudes you see in your own church, your own class or group, and in your own life. At least identify which of the two mindsets best describe you and your class or group. Be sure to add your own ideas to each list.

Multiplication Mindset

Hoarding Mindset

  • When do we get to start a new class or group?
  • Our class is getting large, who can we send out to start another one?
  • Constantly draws attention to the new people we would not know had the new class not existed.
  • Focuses on who is not there yet.
  • Intentional relationship building with lost and unchurched persons
  • Loves the challenge of starting a project from scratch.
  • How can we meet the needs of the community?
  • Celebrates sending out leaders.
  • Success = reproducing groups and leaders
  • The fields are white unto harvest – let’s penetrate the community. (go to the community)
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Enjoys meeting new people
  • Starts imagining how God will use new leaders before they even show up at church (they may connect via ministry in the community first)
  • How can we keep them from splitting our class?
  • When do we get to move into a larger room?
  • Constantly complains because we just don’t know all the people in the church any more
  • Focuses on who is there
  • Intentional relationship building with the saved and the churched (and usually a select group within that category)
  • Loves keeping things as they have been (and maybe always will be)
  • How can the class and church meet our needs?
  • Moans if leaders are “taken” from the class.
  • Success = lots of people present on Sunday
  • Limited view of reaching – they know we are here. (Buildings, programs, etc. will bring the community to us.)
  • Rigid and predictable
  • Uncomfortable among new people
  • Wants new people to pay their dues before serving in leadership roles of any kind

In addition, the North American Mission Board (NAMB) provides a free downloadable resource, “Discovery Tools,” for potential church planters. The spiritual gifts, passions, ministry preference tools are also great resources for helping you create a multiplication mindset through Sunday School. In addition, you may find that those persons who enjoy growing new leaders and starting new classes and groups may also be potential church planters. Go to www.churchplantingvillage.net and click on Discover Church Planting to locate the Discovery Tools Download page.

Consider printing this page to create a discussion with others in your Sunday School class or other ongoing Bible study group.  Are you multiplying or hoarding?  I pray you will develop a multiplication mindset through Sunday School.
