SC Disaster Relief Update 11/7/17
A brief summary of our most recent activities in SC DR:
Hurricane Harvey – teams of shower/laundry volunteers from various parts of SC have been serving weekly since mid-October at a large DR/Send Relief site in Vidor, TX (near the Louisiana border). Teams are scheduled through the end of Thanksgiving weekend. Additionally, the Greenville Association mud-out unit is serving in Rockport, TX on Nov. 3-10. The Ashley River Baptist Church (Charleston) unit, manned chiefly by volunteers from Utica Baptist, Seneca, returned from Rockport Oct. 31.
Spartanburg County Tornadoes – units from Arrowwood Baptist (Chesnee), Grassy Pond Baptist (Gaffney), Union County Association, and Laurens Association helped to clean up after the Oct. 23 tornadoes in Woodruff and other areas of Spartanburg County, as well as in Gaffney. As always, unit leaders, members, or chaplains minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of homeowners as well as doing the physical labor. One unit leader reported that a homeowner in Woodruff accepted Christ as Savior while the SCDR team was cutting trees in his yard!
Puerto Rico – while conditions continue to be extremely challenging, the earliest Southern Baptist DR teams to get into Puerto Rico are now laying the groundwork so that others can follow. Currently, eight associations from SC have committed to “adopt” a Puerto Rican church or pastor in North American Mission Board-coordinated relief efforts. South Carolina churches and associations with previously-established partnerships in Puerto Rico are connecting with those partners to provide recovery assistance as well, with one team traveling from SC to Puerto Rico next week.
