Columbia, SC -

The Office of Public Policy Issues of the South Carolina Baptist Convention (SCBC) hosted the fifth annual Legislative Appreciation Luncheon for members of the South Carolina General Assembly Feb. 18 on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia.

The luncheon is a way through which state representatives and senators are shown appreciation for the work done on behalf of South Carolina Baptists and their interests.  More than 300 legislators and staff, the largest attendance yet for the luncheon, enjoyed a barbecue buffet and a bluegrass band under a heated tent located between the Blatt and Gressette Buildings on the Statehouse grounds.

“This luncheon has grown each year and has been a positive step as we continue to build good relationships with our elected officials,” said Joe Mack, director of the Office of Public Policy.

Dr. B. Carlisle Driggers, executive director-treasurer, SCBC, welcomed the members of the General Assembly to the luncheon and led in prayer.

“The annual Legislative Luncheon sponsored by the South Carolina Baptist Convention has become a featured part of our ministry,” Driggers said.  “We appreciate the opportunity to have fellowship with legislative and governmental leaders and also to remind them of our prayers for all of the work they do to help the citizens of South Carolina enjoy the full benefits of our fine state.”

Governor Mark Sanford and former Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler also attended the luncheon, along with Senator Larry A. Martin from Oconee County, who is also a member of First Church Pickens, SC, has attended this event each year.

"I truly appreciate our state convention hosting me and my colleagues at this annual luncheon.  It's an excellent way for the leadership of our state convention to get to know members of the House and Senate.  That kind of interaction is important, and I know that it's appreciated as the luncheon was very well attended,” Martin said.

According to Mack, plans are already under way for next year’s event.
