Executive Board holds final meeting of the year

The South Carolina Baptist Convention Executive Board held their final meeting of the year Dec. 7 in Columbia. The board organized for 2007, elected new officers and heard recommendations from standing committees.

Mike Moody, chairman of the budget, Finance and Audit committee, told board members that gifts through the Cooperative Program for 2006 have been very good. Moody reported that at this time it appears we will meet and exceed our budget for 2006.  Moody thanked churches, noting this is possible through the faithful giving of South Carolina churches.

Tom Swilley, pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist in Conway was elected chairman of the board, replacing Mike Hamlet, pastor of First Baptist North Spartanburg, who has served as chairman for two years. Other officers elected are DJ Horton, of Anderson Mill Road Church as Vice Chairman and Reiny Koschel of Abbeville First Baptist as Secretary.

Dr. Driggers, South Carolina Baptist Convention Executive-Director Treasurer, recognized Convention staff who have served for five, ten and twenty-five years. Driggers also recognized Herb Griffin and Jane Poster who have each served thirty-five years.

In addition, Dr. Driggers recognized ten executive board members who will end their tenure this year. New members will begin Jan.1.

Dr. and Mrs. Driggers also thanked board members for the special retirement recognition last month at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Taylors. Driggers will retire Feb. 28.

Members also heard from South Carolina workers* serving through the International Mission Board in Thailand.

These workers were the recipients of money from the Kingdom Challenge Fund, established by the executive board last year, and thanked the Convention for their mission support.

“We have been touched by the South Carolina Baptist Convention in numerous ways this past year. Thank you for that very special gift.”

The workers reported of hundreds of baptisms and new Christians through their ministry in the Thai prison system.

The board will meet again April 9-10, 2007 at White Oak Conference Center.
