Columbia, SC -

Sonny Holmes, director of Pastoral Ministries with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, has announced his resignation, effective Nov.14, to accept the call as pastor of Northwood Church in North Charleston.

During his three years at the convention, Holmes has worked with South Carolina Baptist churches and pastors through ministry assistance and resources – including Thy Kingdom Come, Leadercare and interim ministries.  He was also instrumental in launching the convention’s online resume assistance service.

“I have loved working with the convention.  I have gained greater insight into the dynamics of ministry, and am sold-out on the vision and ministry of the state convention,” Holmes said.

Holmes said he also looks forward to serving at Northwood Church, whose congregation he described as “positioned to have a Kingdom impact” and having “a heart to be a Kingdom outpost.”  The skills he has learned from working on the state convention staff will help him lead a group of people to have a Kingdom impact on an unreached community, Holmes added.

According to Dr. Carlisle Driggers, convention executive director-treasurer, it has been a “joy to have Dr. Holmes on the staff of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.  He has assisted our churches and church leaders with wisdom and compassion.  We will miss him, but we know he is returning to his first love as a local church pastor.”

“It has been a privilege and honor to work at the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and to be a part of what God is doing here,” Holmes said.
