15 Disaster Relief units from SC responding in wake of Hurricane Isabel

As of Monday, Sept. 22, the SC Baptist Convention will have deployed 15 Disaster Relief units from across SC to assist victims of Hurricane Isabel’s wrath.  Last Thursday the SC Baptist Convention began sending relief units to Virginia, where flood waters filled homes and streets.

The following is a complete list of the Disaster Relief units that have been activated as of Sept. 22 and includes where each unit is serving. 

In Chesapeake, Va.:

• Feeding unit, the largest in SC, from North Spartan Baptist Association

• 425 gallon water unit, the only one in SC, from Cedar Creek Church, Blythewood of the Columbia Metro Baptist Association

• Shower unit from Barnwell Baptist Association

• Three chainsaw recovery units from Arrowwood Church in Chesnee and

  Kershaw and Marion Baptist Associations

In Norfolk, Va.:

• Two Feeding units from Providence Church in Moncks Corner and Charleston Baptist Association

In Richmond, Va.:

• Three chainsaw recovery units from Lexington, York and Chester Baptist Associations

In Hopewell, Va.:

• Communication unit from Saluda Baptist Association

In Williamston, Va.:

• Chainsaw recovery unit from Taylors, SC

Since North Carolina is also experiencing severe flooding, two units are in

Williamston, NC:

• Two chainsaw recovery units from Abbeville and Edgefield Baptist Associations

The SC Baptist Convention opened a Disaster Relief command post last Thursday, Sept. 18 to send and receive units on their way to assigned areas.  The post provides a place to rest, get updates on Hurricane Isabel’s damage, shower and enjoy snacks.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief uses the strong partnership between the North American Mission Board (NAMB) and state Baptist conventions, such as the SC Baptist Convention, to enlist, train and activate volunteers. The state conventions deploy trained volunteers in cooperation and coordination with NAMB.
