Concert pianist, collaborative artist, vocal coach, and conductor, Howard Kim received his early piano training from master teacher Dorothy Hwang at the R.D. Colburn School of Performing Arts.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the University of California-Los Angeles, studying under Antoinette Perry and Aube Tzerko.  While completing the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance and Literature under the tutelage of Rebecca Penneys at the Eastman School of Music, he was awarded the Performer’s Certificate.  Dr. Kim has won numerous awards and honors and has performed duo piano concerts with Canadian pianist Rebekah Jordan-Miller in New York, Florida, South Carolina, and Canada.  He has been the featured soloist with orchestras, most recently, GAMAC Symphony Orchestra.  While studying conducting from Richard Rintoul he was Assistant Conductor of the Colburn Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra Da Camera, making his television debut in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and radio debut on KUSC radio.  Howard is a veteran of musical theatre and opera for over 20 years, involved in productions in California, New York, Florida, and North Carolina.  He has served as the keyboardist, vocal coach, and/or music director for production companies including Opera Rochester, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, and the Fayetteville State University’s Summer Opera Series.  He was a member of the Mallarmé Chamber Players and served as the keyboardist for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Fayetteville Jazz Orchestra.  He has been a pianist/keyboardist for choirs and churches in many different parts of the United States serving many denominations for over the past 30 years, ranging from traditional to modern.  Dr. Kim is currently Associate Professor of Music at the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University.

 

Children’s Choir Leaders

Deirdre Welborn Francis is active as a voice teacher, performer, and choral conductor.  She has served on the music faculty of The South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University for 20 years and is an Associate Professor of Music teaching voice, vocal pedagogy and vocal diction, and conducts the Contemporary Vocal Lab.  She also teaches in the Musical Theater department, teaching classes and serving as Vocal Coach for AU Playhouse Musical productions.   She has maintained a private voice studio for over 30 years. Ms. Francis’ voice students from both her collegiate and private studios have earned honors at the state and regional level and qualified for Nationals at the National Association of Teachers of Singing annual auditions in classical and music theater categories.  As a soprano, she equally at home singing from the operatic/oratorio, classical, jazz and musical theater repertoire, frequently presenting solo recitals and serving as vocal soloist with area orchestras. Ms. Francis received the Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music from Anderson College, the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Furman University, and the Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College of Rider University.  While at Westminster, she was a soprano in the world-renowned Westminster Choir. She is also a Certified Singing Voice Specialist, trained to rehabilitate vocally injured singers. She is a lecturer on Vocal Pedagogy and Vocal Health, having presented at the State Convention of the South Carolina Music Educators, for the School Districts of Greenville County and Rock Hill, SC, and the Vocal Pedagogy Institute of Anderson University. Ms. Francis for 10 seasons conducted the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium (GAMAC) Girl Choir. She is very active in SC as a choral clinician, honor choir conductor and choral adjudicator for South Carolina Music Educators Association as well as American Choral Directors Association events.  She is active in the SC Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, having served as President and Vice-President and currently serving as SC District Governor.

Adjunct Professor of Music

Jean Ellen Linkins is an Adjunct Professor of Music at Anderson University, Anderson, SC.  She holds a BA in Vocal Arts from Empire State College (2000, SUNY, Rochester, NY), a Master of Music Education from The Eastman School of Music (2005, Rochester, NY), and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum & Instruction/Elementary Education/Music Emphasis/Bible Minor from Bob Jones University (2012, Greenville, SC).

Dr. Linkins’ primary research focus is early childhood music and movement.  Her dissertation is entitled The Pedagogical Philosophy of Lorna Lutz Heyge, PhD (2012, founder of Kindermusik and Musikgarten), and her subsequent book is A Song from the Heart:  The Pedagogical Philosophy of Lorna Lutz Heyge, PhD (2015).

Dr. Linkins has taught voice (from ages six and up, since 1997) and Musikgarten (early childhood music and movement, since 2002).  She has taught several workshops in South Carolina for adult preschool teachers through NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children), and has led Cherubs, a Children’s Choir, and a Senior Adult Choir at church, guest conducted a children’s choir, and led a Christian home-school voice class including Christmas and Easter musicals.
