Unaccompanied Minors at Mexico-US Border Crossing

This statement was issued by the North American Mission Board in early July.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) is monitoring the situation involving unaccompanied minors crossing the  border from Mexico into the United States.

In May, SBDR was engaged through the Southerrn Baptist of Texas Convention (SBTC) and Texas Baptist Men (TBM) with short-term basecamp support at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Border Patrol. SBDR teams provided care for the minors at the Rio Grande Border Patrol station until a full-time contractor could build a facility to house and feed the minors.

The humanitarian need is very great and SBDR continues to monitor the situation with federal agencies.

At this time, volunteer and faith-based organizations are not permitted to engage or provide care until federal and state authorities agree on a plan.

We ask Southern Baptists to continue praying for these children and all those who are making decisions regarding this situation. The North American Mission Board and SBDR will use every means to communicate with Southern Baptists when the next steps become clear.
