Abstinence from Gambling

WHEREAS, The State of South Carolina by way of constitutional amendment has provided for the establishment of a state operated lottery which is a form of legalized gambling; and

WHEREAS, South Carolina Baptists have historically stood in opposition to gambling in all forms, legal or otherwise; and

WHEREAS, The legalization of gambling by way of lottery or otherwise in no way justifies or redeems the practice of its immoral and illicit nature nor does it redeem or diminish the reprehensible and grievous loss and harm inflicted upon the participants, their families, the state and all impacted by the practice; and

WHEREAS, The standard for moral and righteous living for Christians and all people is the immutable and unchanging divinely inspired word of God which standard must be upheld by all Christians to the Glory of God not withstanding legislation to the contrary; and

WHEREAS, The obligation and opportunity for Christians to witness to their faith in the Lord to provide all their needs is not diminished or relaxed in the face of the legalization of gambling but instead is heightened in light of this increased temptation; and

WHEREAS, Christians may best employ this witness without compromise or hypocrisy by abstaining from all forms of gambling and the lottery in particular and

WHEREAS, Christians should always exercise their witness in the spirit of the grace and love demonstrated by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That we the messengers to the South Carolina Baptist Convention meeting in Columbia on November 13–14, 2001 again express our vigorous opposition to gambling in all its forms and applications with special reference to the lottery; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this convention call upon all people but particularly those professing a faith in Jesus Christ to abstain from all forms of participation, support or association with the practice of gambling and the lottery in particular; and be it further

RESOLVED, That all Christians reaffirm and reassert their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to provide and meet their every need whether that be on a state, local or individual level and whether it be of an economic, physical, emotional, or spiritual nature; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a campaign opposing the lottery bearing the slogan, "S.C. Lottery...Don't Bet On It" be established, endorsed and publicly communicated to send a clear unified message of opposition to the lottery and participation therein; and be it finally

RESOLVED, That this convention call upon all Christians to live out the convictions of their faith in the presence of all men with humility and grace so as to bring glory and honor to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ that all might come to find complete satisfaction and salvation in Him alone.
