The idea is that different people learn best in different ways. Thomas Armstrong, in his book Seven Kinds of Smart, teaches that we should not ask “How smart is this child,” but rather “How is this child smart?” As we teach preschoolers and children at church, we must be conscious of the varied learning styles within our group or class, and offer a variety of activities so that each child has opportunities to learn in ways that are most effective for them. Armstrong’s work has been revised to identify eight learning approaches:
Verbal Visual
Physical Logical
Musical Relational
Reflective Natural
Watch this space in the coming weeks for more details on each of the eight learning approaches.
