Fun and Learning Come Together
at Bible Fun Field Day
By Sue Harmon
Children in one room used trash cans, jars of beans, and plungers for musical instruments, while across the hall youngsters wielding fishing poles cast their lines to snare “fish” that spelled out a Bible verse. Next door, children holding a web of yarn called out the names of Bible books. Boys and girls outside played “clothespin tag” as teachers and chaperones cheered them on.
These activities and many more were a part of the experience of Bible Fun Field Day. Held on September 29 at White Oak Conference Center, the event drew 267 children and 110 of their leaders from churches across the state.
Early arrivers were challenged with a scavenger hunt involving Bible verses, questions, and clues. Then the day was spent rotating to classes in missions, Bible skills, music, and recreation. Church leaders accompanied their children to the classes, to participate and observe. They also had the opportunity to attend sessions just for grown-ups, to enhance their teaching or parenting skills.
Bible Fun Field Day has a two-fold purpose: to provide fun learning experiences for children, and to expose their leaders to examples of quality teaching and resources in various areas of ministry. The event is co-sponsored by the Childhood Ministry Group, Woman’s Missionary Union, and Worship and Music Office of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Offered on alternating years, the next Bible Fun Field Day is scheduled for September of 2009.
