9 Places to Find New Teachers
Since it's an ongoing campaign to make sure you have classes staffed with the best teachers, you're probably always on the lookout for people who are called to this important assignment. You never know when one of your teachers will be moving, will take a leave of absence with a new baby or take on a department director's responsibility. So, where can you find new teachers when you need them? Here are some suggestions:
1. Vacation Bible School
People who teach in VBS are good prospects to teach in Sunday School. Plan a meeting and invite them to observe a specific Sunday School Department.
2. Choir Members
Encourage choir members to attend new teacher training. Explain the resources that are available to prepare them for teaching responsibilities.
3. Deacons
Make arrangements ahead of time to attend a deacons meeting and share the available teaching opportunities.
4. Retired school teachers
A person who taught school for many years may be ready to teach in Sunday School. Share with the retired teacher that children of all ages need someone with time, love, care and patience. Ask an experienced teacher to become a director and enlist a friend to teach with her.
5. Former Sunday School Teachers
Former Sunday School teachers may be sitting in adult Sunday School classes waiting to be needed. Maybe they taught in the past, but are interested in teaching a different age-group now. Visit adult Sunday School classes and present teaching opportunities.
6. Parents
Ask moms and dads to volunteer to teach in Extended Teaching Care. Parents who volunteer on a regular basis make good prospects for new preschool teachers.
7. Church Bulletin
Place a notice in the church bulletin explaining the need for teachers. Include a form for interested people to complete and return to the church office. Ask for the volunteer's name, address, telephone number, and age-group preference.
8. Grandparents and Other Senior Adults
Take a preschooler or child with you to a senior adult department. Invite the adults to make an impact on the new generation by teaching in a childhood ministry department.
9. Single Adults
Single adults often respond with a willingness to help when presented with a need. Encourage singles to volunteer with a friend and teach together.
