Camp McCall is offering a training event for camps that need to train staff. This co-ed event will require participants to choose one area of training for the entire week. The tracks will begin on Sunday at 1:00 pm, and conclude on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
These tracks include: Life Guarding, Challenge Course Facilitation, Backpacking, Climbing, Canoeing, and Basic Adventure Recreation.
Two tracks do not take all week, and both may be taken: Archery and Riflery.
The cost for the training is $125.00, which includes all lodging and meals.
Pre-training Events:
Wilderness First Aid (Wilderness Medical Society) will be offered for an additional $150.00, which includes student book, field guide, lodging and meals. We will begin with dinner at 5 pm on Friday, May21, and conclude with lunch on Sunday, May 23. WFA Standard Level Certification requires 16 hours of class time. This includes lecture, skills practice, scenarios, and a final written exam. Class size limited to 12 participants.
AHA Heart Saver CPR will be offered for $25.00, and will be held Saturday, May 22, from 6 pm until 10:00 pm. Class size limited to seven participants. This is a two-year certification. Individual skill proficiency must be demonstrated (no written exam).
Tracks:
Life Guarding
This track, is offered through The American Red Cross, and is the Water Front Life Guarding Course. CPR and First Aid are offered as part of the course. To participate one must swim 550 yards (200 yards front crawl, 200 yards breast stroke, and 150 yards which can be a combo of either), swim 20 yards, front surface dive, pick up a 10 pound object, surface, and swim back to the starting point. One must complete this at the beginning of the course in order to take the course. The water at McCall is cold, and a wet suit is recommended. Red Cross certification will be obtained upon the completion of the practical water test, the written exam and first aid and CPR. Class size limited to 10.
Challenge Course Facilitation
This track is designed for the person who operates elements on a ropes course. Training will entail both high and low elements with emphasis on knot tying, belaying, set up, safety, crowd control, gear, and debriefing. This course will be hands on training. Comfortable clothing, closed toed shoes, gloves, bandana, harness, two wide mouth carabiners, and a figure eight are all required. You will receive a completion certificate for the number of hours completed.
Backpacking
This track will be a three-day trip that teaches skills needed to successfully lead a group on a backpacking trip. Gear will be provided, but you may bring your own. All gear brought will be inspected, and can be used only if approved by the trip leader. You will need your own clothing for the trip. Loose fitting, hiking clothing, plus a fleece, and good hiking shoes is necessary. Please no new shoes. Help yourself by breaking those puppies in before you arrive. We will provide rain gear, all food, and shelter. The weather can be cold at night, but should be warm during the day. You will receive a completion certificate for the number of hours completed.
Climbing
This is a rock-climbing track that teaches set ups, knots, belays, and proper techniques to lead a climbing trip for a top belay climb. You need a harness, two carabiners, and comfortable clothing, including a fleece, and rain gear. No certificates are given, but you will receive a completion certificate for the number of hours completed.
Canoeing
This track will offer a flat-water canoe rating for those needing to lead trips. Practical lessons, local trips, and safety are all a part of this track. Gear is provided, except for personal clothing and a wet suit. Written and practical exam must be successfully completed for certification.
Basic Adventure Recreation
This track enables participants to lead campers in many types of new games that build camper relationships. You will emerge with so many games you can play forever. Low ropes will be experienced, as well as some high elements. This track is useful for all staffers as you learn to build a repertoire of games. Participants will learn the value of debriefing, group building skills, and many ways to help bring participants into the group experience.
Archery
(Begins Sunday at 1:00 pm, and concludes on Monday at 1:00 pm)
The completion of this track will enable participants to be a safe and effective basic instructor in archery through The National Alliance for the Development of Archery (NADA) and is recognized by both USA Archery and NFAA. Practical application is applied on the range for students to be able to teach basic archery. Exam is included, both practical and written. Class size is 12. Book included.
Riflery
(Begins Monday at 1:00 pm, and concludes Wednesday at 5:00 pm)
The completion of this track will enable participants to become certified in the Basic National Rifle Association Rifle Course. This certification meets the American Camp Association’s requirement for a staffer operating a rifle program. Class time and shooting at the range are part of this class. 22s will be used. All equipment provided. Written and practical exam must be successfully completed for certification. Book included.
